Five Magnetic Separator Myths, Part Two: Are All Rare Earth Magnetic Separators the Same?

Five Magnetic Separator Myths, Part Two: Are All Rare Earth Magnetic Separators the Same-Bunting

In a hypothetical scenario, imagine a client who has an urgent metal contamination problem and is seeking to install the ideal piece of magnetic separation equipment. Because the client is working with small metal particles, they are seeking a magnetic separator that uses rare earth magnets because they heard that rare earth magnets have the strongest magnetic field. You may imagine that this client simply has to pick up the phone and order a “rare earth magnetic separator.” However, it isn’t that simple.

The term “rare earth magnetic separator” is unspecific. Ordering a “rare earth magnetic separator” without any further detail would be like telling an auto dealership you would like a new vehicle without specifying whether you wanted a car, a truck, or an SUV.

Not every Bunting magnetic separator is the same, because not every application has the same requirements.

In magnetic separation, neodymium iron boron magnets are the most commonly used rare earth magnets. However, choosing the type of magnet (rare earth magnet vs. ceramic, etc.) to use in a magnetic separator is just the first step. There are many different applications magnetic separators are used in, and just like you wouldn’t take a sports car off-roading, you have to make sure you are using the right type of magnetic separator for your application.

For example, if you are working with material prone to clumping, bridging, and build-up, you’ll want to select a hump magnet separator that is designed to resist flow problems. As another example, if you are looking for a magnetic liquid trap, consider the properties of the liquid you are working with. If you are dealing with an acidic liquid such as orange juice, you’ll want to select Bunting’s carefully designed corrosive-resistant magnetic liquid trap, designed specifically to handle corrosive and acidic liquids. The type of material you are working with, your desired separation goals, and the layout of your processing facility are just a few of the factors that will determine.

Bunting is committed to supplying our customers with the highest quality magnetic separators for their unique applications. We offer multiple different options for our custom designed magnetic separators, and work closely with our customers to develop the magnetic separator that is best for them. Additionally, we carry a large on hand inventory and use lean manufacturing to keep lead times down to a couple weeks if we do not have something in stock that fits your needs right away.

Not every magnetic separator at Bunting is the same because we know that not every application has the same requirements. However, all of our magnetic separators are held to the same standards of quality, durability, and performance.
