Fabricator Skills Matrix by Competency

Level Level 1 (Beginner)

•  Equipment Operation: Can operate basic press brake with supervision; understands basic safety procedures; follows pre-programmed machine settings.

Blueprint Reading: Understands basic dimensions and symbols; recognizes standard views and components; requires clarification on complex drawings.

Material Knowledge: Identifies common metals (steel, aluminum); understands basic material thicknesses; aware of standard material handling procedures.

Quality Control: Uses basic measuring tools correctly; checks work against specifications; identifies obvious defects.

Level 2 (Intermediate)

Equipment Operation: Independently operates standard press brakes and rollers; sets up simple jobs with minimal assistance; troubleshoots basic equipment issues.

Blueprint Reading: Reads standard blueprints without assistance; understands tolerances and basic GD&T; can extract complete part information.

Material Knowledge: Knows characteristics of standard alloys; understands material spring-back properties; selects appropriate tools for different materials.

Quality Control: Proficient with all standard measuring equipment; understands quality acceptance criteria; performs in-process quality checks.

Level 3 (Advanced)

Equipment Operation: Proficient with all shop equipment including CNC press brakes; programs and sets up complex jobs independently; performs advanced troubleshooting.

Blueprint Reading: Interprets complex fabrication blueprints; full understanding of GD&T principles; can visualize 3D components from 2D drawings.

Material Knowledge: Extensive knowledge of material behaviors; anticipates forming challenges with various materials; adjusts techniques for difficult materials.

Quality Control: Uses advanced inspection techniques; anticipates quality issues before they occur; implements corrective actions independently.

Level 4 (Expert)

Equipment Operation: Masters all fabrication equipment; optimizes machine setups for maximum efficiency; can recommend equipment modifications/improvements

Blueprint Reading: Expert in all blueprint interpretation; can identify drawing errors or improvements; understands design intent beyond documentation

Material Knowledge: Expert in all shop materials and their properties; develops specialized techniques for exotic materials; can recommend material substitutions

Quality Control: Develops quality control procedures; can perform complex inspections using all equipment; trains others on quality standards

Certification Requirements for Each Level

• Written assessment demonstrating theoretical knowledge.

• Practical demonstration of required skills.
